Dr. Troy Nash tells an amazing story about his project to infect social media with positive messages.

It started when his daughter showed him what she was looking at on the internet. There were kids fighting and doing all kinds of hurtful things. He realized that there was no regulation with what is put on the internet. No one oversees it or says what should be allowed and what should not. After talking to his daughter about negativity and how we spend our time, Dr. Nash decided that he would infect social media. He started posting positive posts, and did it every single day for a full year.

His posts began to go viral and people began to tell him that they wanted to join his posse, so he named it Triple P, the Positive Post Posse.

Lessons Learned

Dr. Nash explains that people can make a difference right where they are. We can choose to put positive energy into the universe and that as we do that, we can make a difference. Although his project began because he was talking to his daughter, this idea isn’t just for young people; adults also need to be reminded that people can make a difference.

Dr. Nash says, “it almost seems in the world today that being positive is more the exception than the rule. And that bothers me. And it should bother you, and you, and you, and all of us.” He didn’t expect that his social media campaign would go viral, but he found that when we put out positive energy, “it will take hold so that we can push back the forces of darkness. That sounded like a comic book line, didn’t it? But I believe that.”

Positivity

Positivity changes so many aspects of our lives that it has a huge impact on our wellbeing. Positive thoughts can change our internal world, which changes our connection to our own spirit. Positive speech and actions change our relationships with others.

One reason it is so important to place an emphasis in our mind and interactions on positivity is because as humans we have an inherent negativity bias. Scientists theorize that ancient humans needed a bias towards negativity so they would notice when they were in danger. If something that was wrong stood out to them, they might be able to run or fight and save their lives.

For us, the negativity bias is still present, but it isn’t serving us. It is not keeping us safe, instead it is leading to higher rates of stress, anxiety, depression, and all the physical symptoms that accompany those. To overcome the negativity bias, we can choose to focus on positivity whether it’s on social media or in the rest of our lives.

Gratitude

One of the first ways that we can change our mindset to focus on positivity is to practice gratitude. Gratitude practices encourage us to look at our day and notice the things that are going well. This can also mean looking at the events of our day in a new way to notice how they are good or beneficial for us even if our initial reaction was that they were not positive.

There are many simple gratitude practices. One option is to begin your day by counting off five things that you are grateful for. Another option is to end your day with three things from the day that you are grateful for. You can keep your gratitude practice private by writing it in a journal or keeping a gratitude jar with slips of paper. Or you can practice gratitude with your loved ones by telling each other what you are grateful for at dinner or at the end of the day.  

Positive Connections

We can also add to our positivity by creating positive connections. I use the word tribe to describe the people who are closest to us. There is a common saying that you become the 5 people who are closest to you, so it is important to pick people for your tribe who are a positive influence on you and who have a positive outlook. Their outlook will influence you more than you realize.

Feeling connected also helps us build positivity. Spend time face-to-face with your family and friends. Plan to sit down and share a meal at least once a week. Find other ways that you can spend time with them, whether it’s playing, going for a walk, or cooking a meal together.

Falling in Love With Ourselves

The most important component of the PsychoSpiritual Quadrant is falling in love with ourselves. For many of us, that is a difficult feat. But being positive and focusing on the positive in the world around us is one of the steps that will help us to fall in love with ourselves. Being positive means that instead of focusing on the things that we didn’t accomplish today, or the ways that we fell short, we can see and remember the good about the day and ourselves, and we can show love and compassion to ourselves.
